What to expect in India?
India
“Incredible India” is the slogan of India’s’ national tourist office. And the only thing I can say: “If you haven’t seen or experienced it, you’d never believe it for sure!” India, even from the point of view of a quite experienced traveler and globetrotter is for sure different and unique; but to me it’s the most amazing place I ever have visited.
What is it about?
-
It’s 180° opposite of western society
-
It has an amazing cultural heritage and diversity
-
Everything is extreme: Number of people, size of cities, the contrast of traditions & modern, poor & rich, clean (inside) & dirty (outside)
-
There are many people
What surprises you:
-
Almost everything
-
The colors, shapes, number of things you never saw before
-
The mostly vegetarian food
The pros for a cycle tourist:
-
You can choose roads with little traffic
-
Even in towns like Mumbai, traffic is so dense that as a cyclist you’re usually faster than motor vehicles
-
Adventure guaranteed
The challenges:
-
The climate and heat
-
For people who don’t like crowds and to be approached by foreigners, India will be tough
-
Bad, sometimes very or even extremely bad roads
-
Low hygiene in most areas
-
Low medical standards in rural areas
-
In some parts inconsiderate motorists (can mostly be avoided)
Who would like India:
-
Those who look for real adventure & authenticity
-
Those who like it a little bit crazy
-
Those who don’t mind being approached by foreigners
-
People who like challenges
-
Those who want to experience a 3rd world experience 1st hand
