Taiwan is an insiders' tip for touring cyclists par excellence. Of course, the country is well known for its bicycle industry which is in fact the world’s largest, but Taiwan can probably answer to all what (touring) cyclists and also tourists would love to experience. If it’s just for the sake of road cycling it might be Asia's greatest destinations as it combines numerous outstanding possibilities within a relatively small area. Bicycle paths, cycle friendly infrastructure, main roads with wide shoulders and many small roads are standard. Even in Taipei there is a cycle way on both sides of the river, ideal to enter or exit this metropolitan city by bike. Car and truck drivers are usually well mannered, another positive fact that contributes to an enjoyable and safe ride.
Perhaps best of all, Taiwan is a rather inexpensive place and possibly the destination where you get most value for your money.
Landscapes are just amazing and the east coast is without doubt one of (or maybe) the most beautiful places SWISS TOURER has ever cycled. Climbing the mountains offers the chance to see even more of this fantastic place; in the north these aren't very high and steep. However, the central mountains are a challenge even for avid cyclists with heights up to 3200m.
Taiwan's attractions are not just limited to landscapes and for such a small country it really punches above its weight when it comes to Chinese cultural heritage. Taiwan's cities offer a lot to those who like hectic Asian lifestyle full of colors, Taipei is especially worth a good look around. The food is another part of the Chinese culture that nobody should miss out on.
The Taiwanese are very friendly and helpful people with a great sense of hospitality and even if there is a language barrier, they always manage to find somebody who speaks English or a solution for whatever problem. When asking for directions or assistance, don’t be surprised if you are invited in for coffee or food at the same occasion.
